In the lecture “Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do,” Harvard professor Michael Sandel discusses two types of moral reasoning: categorical and consequentialist. Categorical moral reasoning is a type of deontological moral reasoning based on rights and duties regardless of the consequences. Consequentialist moral reasoning bases morality on the consequences of an act rather than the act itself. Sandel describes what is often called the “trolley dilemma.”

With the advent of self-driving vehicles, we have an updated version of the trolley dilemma. The Moral Machine is a project by MIT that is using crowdsourcing to help make autonomous vehicles “moral.” Visit the Moral Machine website provided in the Study Materials for this module and view the short video. Click “Start Judging” at the bottom of the page and go through a few scenarios.

Consider the trolley dilemma that is described in Sandel’s lecture. In an essay of 500 words, discuss the following:

  • Do you find yourself siding with a consequentialist or categorical (deontological) approach to moral reasoning in this case? Why?
  • After reviewing the Moral Machine, describe the observations you can make about yourself in how you are judging moral actions. What ethical questions are being raised for you?
  • Which scenario do you think is most ethical of the two scenarios described below? Which type of moral reasoning (categorical or consequentialist) would support your view? Explain. You are the new HR leader for a small manufacturing firm located in the Midwest. Before you and your preceptor Dr. Wilson enter the room to meet Mr. Barley, you think about the definition of dyspnea:

Dr. Wilson greets Mr. Barley, introduces you, and then excuses himself to go see another patient. He states he will be back for you to present Mr. Barley’s case to him.

Wondering if his shortness of breath is due to a panic disorder, you ask him a series of questions and note that his symptoms are not associated with paresthesia, choking, nausea, chest pain, derealization feeling, trembling or shaking, dizziness, palpitations, sweating, chills, or flushes.

You say, “So I understand that you have had a cough with white phlegm for the past two winters and that you have been experiencing shortness of breath with exertion. You may have been exposed to some chemical irritants at your farm, but you have been careful about this. You also smoke cigarettes.”

“Let’s go in and do the physical together,” says Dr. Wilson, “But, first, what are you thinking so far, in terms of a differential?”

After pausing to think, you reply to Dr. Wilson, “He could have bronchitis.”

Since the intention here is to critically assess a qualitative study, the CASP Qualitative Checklist is appropriate. Using the criteria in the template provided, analyze and appraise your selected qualitative research article. Fill out the assessment entirely, being sure to add rationales and explanations in all comment sections.

Working within the same group, you will select and analyze a primary report of qualitative nursing research published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies.  Note that this is a professional, peer-reviewed nursing journal.
